Faith as a Resource

For each section, please complete AT LEAST the number of required experiences.

For each experience, please write a 1-2 paragraph OR record a 1-2 minute video clip summarizing what you did and also how it connects to your life.

Reading the Bible - At least 5 experiences required

  • Read

    Read an entire book of the Bible. (Obadiah, Philemon, 2 & 3 John, and Jude will only count if you read all 5 and count it as 1 book.) Afterwards, either write a paragraph or record a 2 minute video sharing at least 3 things that you learned and how that connects to your life. You can do this experience up to 3 times as part of the requirements.

  • Watch

    Go to the Bible Project website (www.bibleproject.com). They have individual videos summarizing many of the books of the Bible. For every 2 of these “books of the Bible” videos that you watch, either write a paragraph or record a 2 minute video sharing at least 3 things that you learned and how that connects to your life. You can do this experience up to 3 times as part of the requirements.

  • Reflect & Create

    From the list of parables, pick one that looks interesting or that you’ve heard of. Create some artwork (painting, drawing, song, etc.) that conveys the message and meaning of the parable. See APPENDIX #3.

  • Attend

    Attend the confirmation class on Reading the Bible. (Year 1)

  • Attend

    Attend the confirmation class on Jesus & the Gospels (Year 1)

  • Watch

    Watch the sermon by Rachel Held Evans on Mark 8:27-38. Read the scripture, watch the video. Write a 2 paragraph summary and response on this sermon.

  • Be Creative

    Create your own project to demonstrate that you have read through some of the Bible and illustrate how it connects with your life. Before you begin, discuss your idea with Lauren.

  • Attend

    Attend Confirmation Class on Intro to the Bible (Year 2)

  • Attend

    Attend Class on Reading the Bible: Christmas Story (Year 3)

Worship Life - At least 3 experiences required

  • REQUIRED: Attend

    Attend worship regularly, either in person or online. To get credit, you must attend for 20 Sundays. See APPENDIX #4.

  • Research

    Do a little research about the liturgical year and church holidays, seasons and colors. Create some artwork to represent this or to teach someone else about it.

  • Reflect

    Pick 3 hymns or songs and write a short reflection about each one. What imagery is used? What Bible stories/passages/themes are conveyed in each song? When would it be good to sing this song? Is there a story about when or how this hymn/song was written?

  • Attend

    Attend the confirmation class on Worship. (All Years)

  • Attend

    Attend the confirmation class on The Church Year. (Year 1)

  • Be Creative

    Create your own project to demonstrate that you understand what we are doing when we worship and illustrate how it connects with your life. Before you begin, discuss your idea with Lauren.

  • Attend

    Attend Class on The Church Year (Year 3)

Prayer Forms - At least 3 experiences required

  • Learn

    Learn how to pray & practice the Examen prayer. Write a short set of instructions that could be used to teach someone else how to pray this prayer.

  • Learn

    Learn how to pray & practice the Prayer Labyrinth. Write a short set of instructions that could be used to teach someone else how to use this prayer form.

  • Learn

    Learn how to pray & practice Centering Prayer. Write a short set of instructions that could be used to teach someone else how to pray this prayer.

  • Learn

    Learn how to pray & practice using Prayer Beads. Write a short set of instructions that could be used to teach someone else how to use this prayer form.

  • Learn

    Learn how to pray & practice Lectio Divina. Write a short set of instructions that could be used to teach someone else how to use this prayer form to read Scripture.

  • Learn

    Learn how to pray & practice using Prayer Stations. Create your own Prayer Station.

  • Catechism

    Luther’s Small Catechism has prayers written for Morning Blessing, Evening Blessing, and Mealtimes. Read these prayers and write 1-2 paragraphs summarizing them.

  • Write

    Write your own set of morning, evening, and mealtime prayers.

  • Write

    Write your own prayers for a worship service. These prayers should include local (within the Trinity community) and global prayers (prayers for Evanston and the more global world based on what’s going on in the world)

  • Be Creative

    Create your own project to demonstrate that you’ve tried and practiced various prayer forms. Before you begin, discuss your idea with Lauren.

  • Attend

    Attend Class on Intro to Prayer Forms (Year 2)

Devotion, Meditation, Quiet Time - at least 2 experiences required

  • Read

    Read a morning or nightly devotion from a book for an entire month or during a season like Advent or Lent. You can choose one on your own, or ask Lauren for suggestions.

  • Catechism

    Read from Luther’s Small Catechism with a parent each night. Do only 1 section per day and discuss what you each think it means. Read through the entire Small Catechism in this way.

  • Faith5

    With a parent, practice the FAITH 5 at home every night for two weeks. Use the daily devotions that are found in the church bulletin as the scripture readings. See APPENDIX #5.

  • Read & Reflect

    There are 9 sections in Luther’s Small Catechism about the Lord’s Prayer. Read all 9 sections and summarize each one.

  • Be Creative

    Create your own devotion time and practice and spend regular quiet time with God for a solid week. Before you begin, discuss your idea with Lauren.

  • Attend

    Attend Confirmation Class on Guided Meditation (Year 2)

  • Attend

    Attend class on Devotion and Meditation (Year 3)

Holy Communion Connection - at least 2 experiences required

  • Serve

    Help set up & clean up Communion OR help serve as a Communion Assistant for multiple Sundays. (1x per month). Please keep track in APPENDIX #4.

  • Catechism

    There are 4 sections in Luther’s Small Catechism about Communion. Read all 4 sections and summarize each one.

  • Attend

    Attend the confirmation class on Communion. (Year 1)

  • Read

    Read “A Place for You” by Daniel Erlander.

  • Be Creative

    Create your own project to demonstrate your understanding of Communion and why it is important in your life as a Christian. Before you begin, discuss your idea with Lauren.

    Attend Confirmation Class on Preparation for Communion (Year 2)
